A treadmill stress test, also known as a stress test or exercise test, is an exam we use to monitor how the heart works during physical activity. A treadmill test in Forest Park involves walking on a treadmill at increasing inclines and speeds. During the test, we closely monitor your heart with an electrocardiogram (EKG) while you exercise. We place electrodes on your body that record your heart’s signals. Your nurses record the signals to better understand the health of your heart.

To prepare for your treadmill test at Ahmed Family Practice, we recommend following any instructions your nurse provides prior to your test. Wear loose, comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for walking or jogging. Lastly, avoid consuming caffeine, smoking, or eating a heavy meal at least 2 to 3 hours before your appointment.
There are many benefits of treadmill stress testing, including:
- Uncovering heart-related conditions, such as coronary artery disease
- Monitoring the heart to assess the condition of your body
- Determining if a patient is cleared to participate in physical activity or exercise programs
- Assessing a patient’s physical fitness
- Detecting abnormal heart rate
- Comparing the heart rate under physical exertion to your resting heart rate
We recommend a stress test for patients experiencing chest pain or discomfort during exercise. This test is also good for those with symptoms of heart disease or other heart-related conditions. Patients with conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes can also undergo a treadmill test in Forest Park.
If exercise isn’t part of your routine but your doctor advises you to start, a stress test is an effective way of determining the condition of your heart.
Stress tests are considered safe, with minimal risk of complications. We administer our tests in a controlled environment with one of our nurses on hand. Your nurse responds to any potential complications and closely monitors your health. It is essential to follow all instructions provided and to communicate any concerns you have during the test.
After you finish your treadmill test, your nurse will go over your results with you. The results provide relevant information about the health of your heart and how it functions. A normal result can mean the heart is in good working condition. It’s able to increase its workload during exercise or physical activity.
Abnormal results, on the other hand, can indicate a heart issue such as a blockage or coronary artery disease. Abnormal results can also uncover other heart-related concerns linked to weakened heart muscles or heart failure.
