An X-ray passes a small amount of radiation through your body and onto a digital device, creating an image we analyze. As the radiation passes through your body, your bones, tissues, and organs absorb it differently. This results in a clear image incorporating various shades of gray, depending on the density and thickness of the tissue. This allows our providers to view the images and identify abnormalities, injuries, fractures, and more.

Most patients can receive X-rays in Forest Park without issue. However, there are certain situations where an X-ray may be discouraged. We recommend alternative solutions for pregnant women, as radiation can pose a risk to the developing fetus. We may also pursue other options for people who may be sensitive to radiation, such as small children under the age of 5.
Before you come in for your appointment, your provider gives you instructions. There are a few steps you can take to prepare:
- Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing free of zippers or buttons
- Remove any jewelry or metal objects
- Avoid eating or drinking before your appointment
It’s important to closely follow any other instructions we provide at our office before your X-ray.
When you visit our office for your consultation, your provider may recommend an X-ray for the following reasons:
- To diagnose any potential joint injuries, fractures, sprains, broken bones, or other conditions affecting your bones or joints.
- To diagnose and monitor various conditions within the body. An X-ray can provide an image of your lungs and reveal some forms of cancer.
- To monitor the progression of various medical conditions. Your provider may use an X-ray to check on and evaluate the effectiveness of treatments.
Yes, X-rays performed in our office are safe. At Ahmed Family Practice, we closely follow safety guidelines. The radiation exposure is very minimal. Patients who receive X-rays should not experience any adverse reactions or side effects.
The number of X-rays you need depends on the kind of condition or injury you have. For a broken bone, you may only need one or two X-rays. The first one diagnoses your injury. Any following imaging will monitor and assess your healing progress.
You may require a series of X-rays for conditions specific to various body parts, such as the lungs. We can use X-rays to closely monitor your progression, comparing previous images to current ones. Depending on your unique situation, your provider will determine how many X-rays you need.
